«In campo azzurro»:
The Zuccari and Blue Paper
The essay considers the role of handmade blue paper (carta azzurra) in the oeuvres of Taddeo (1529-1566) and Federico Zuccari (ca. 1541-1609). It examines three areas in particular: the role of blue paper within the brothers’ drawing practices; the relationship between the color blue and the concept of the divine in Federico’s understanding of disegno (both interno and esterno); and the connection between blue paper – also used as wrapping for sugar – and the Zuccari heraldic device of the sugarloaf. By proposing themes for future research and reflection, I discuss drawings by both Taddeo and Federico, their role within each artist’s oeuvre, and the relationship between drawing on blue paper and the generative process of disegno.
Il saggio esamina il ruolo della carta azzurra nelle opere di Taddeo (1529-1566) e Federico Zuccari (circa 1541-1609). L’analisi si concentra in particolare su tre ambiti: il ruolo della carta azzurra nella pratica grafica dei due fratelli; il rapporto tra il colore blu e il concetto del divino nella concezione zuccaresca del disegno (sia interno che esterno); e il rapporto tra la carta azzurra – utilizzata anche come involucro per lo zucchero – e l’emblema araldico degli Zuccari raffigurante il pan di zucchero. Proponendo temi per future ricerche e approfondimenti, discuto i disegni di Taddeo e Federico, la loro collocazione all’interno dell’opera di ciascun artista e il rapporto tra il disegno su carta azzurra e il processo generativo del disegno.
